Staff Life

Becoming a Resident Staff

Resident staff of MorningSun need to embrace two important principles: the desire to live a life of practice, and the desire to use one's talents and energy to serve other people, animals, plants, and minerals.

A person or family needs to have a certain level of compatibility with MorningSun. This is evaluated through fulfillment of an interview process which includes visits and discussion between applicants and founding members.

Please contact us to get started on the interview process.

Commitments and Expectations of Resident Staff and Other Residents
The following is an initial outline of what Resident Staff commit to and/or will be expected to do.
Certain residents may be exempt from some of the commitments and expectations (for example: one member of a family is a staff member and the others are not, see below.)

Resident of MorningSun:
Understand and support the vision;
Commit to the unfolding process (and not the end result) of community building;
Learn the basics of mindfulness meditation (stopping, looking deeply, applying insight) and techniques (sitting, walking, eating, speaking and listening);
Take up the Mindfulness Trainings as adapted by the community;
Learn and use the community's conflict resolution practice;
Attend at least the minimum of shared practice;
Attend at least one week of retreat time annually;
Participate in seasonal festivals to the best of one's capacity (which understandably fluctuates);
Make a basic work and/or financial contribution;
Meet financial requirements on time.

Living our daily lives in a way that strengthens our well being, health, and joy, we can be more effective and inspired in the work of caring for our families, neighbors, society, environment, and world.

Additional Commitments of Resident Staff:
Attend shared daily practice alongside other staff and guests;
Learn and use the Education Center's conflict resolution practice;
Maintain a healthy involvement with and responsibility for programs and guests of the retreat;
Follow the directives of the Education Center's administration.

Conditions for exemption:
Certainly there will be relatives like aging parents, young children, or older children making long visits, and even spouses of residents who will not be able to meet the commitments and expectations outlined above. Such persons will be able to live in MorningSun if:

They maintain a positive attitude about and are supportive of the vision.
They are familiar with and respect the practice of others around them.
They follow the same practical and logistical guidelines as other residents.
They understand and are willing to participate in MorningSun's conflict resolution practices.

Exemptions will be accepted by MorningSun after a careful interview process is conducted to ensure that the above conditions are understood and met by the applicant, and the entire staff community will be consulted for approval.
